On David Mamet

David Mamet has always been a hero of mine, especially because of his energetic way with dialogue. But the trouble with hero-worship is that the hero has a tendency to turn around and shit on their acolytes. So it is with a kind of grizzly mix of agony and joy that I read of his latest and ludicrous right-wing diatribes, as reported in the Guardian. As Bertolt Brecht didn’t write: “Pity the critic that needs a hero!” So is Mamet great, or demented? Join the digital debate.
