On In-Yer-Face Theatre
Saturday 5th March 2011
This week is the 10th anniversary of the first appearance of my book on In-Yer-Face Theatre, which was published by Faber and Faber on 5 March 2001. So, for the past 10 years, it has been an intimate part of my life: I can’t honestly claim that it has made me rich, but it did hustle up some invites to several theatre festivals, conferences and events. It got me air tickets, and top billing. Because of this book, I visited parts of Europe I knew little about, and I met some brilliant people (yes, you know who you are). Because of the book, I found out about other theatre traditions, and had some great discussions. Because of the book, I’ve met dozens of playwrights here and abroad. Because of the book, I’ve had the chance to stay in beautiful hotels, to drink glasses of fine wine, with the occasional shot of local throat-burning spirits. Yes, I’ve been gladdened by the generosity of theatre people, and the warm reception I’ve been given by the many that turned out to hear me speak. So a big thanks to all of you. Oh, and Faber and Faber has just told me that the book is being reprinted yet again. Thanks guys — what a good anniversary present. So here’s to another decade of writing!
