On Theatre Uncut
Monday 14th March 2011
This week, the enterprising Southwark Playhouse hosts Theatre Uncut, a theatre event in response to the Coalition cuts, led as ever by our new Iron Chancellor. The good thing about these plays is that they will be looking not just at the arts (which always feels a bit like special pleading), but at some of the other areas of society that will also be hit. So it will be worth seeing what insights and perspectives come from the keyboards of David Greig, Mark Ravenhill, Dennis Kelly, Jack Thorne and Lucy Kirkwood. Plus others! And there will be similar events around the country. After its rather dismal showing at last night’s Olivier Awards, when the Americans won the best play award yet again, it’s nice to see British new writing on the attack. But short plays are the easy option: what about some great new full-length plays?
